What is Cloud Gaming? – ILFE-2P

Video games have become more complex in both mechanics and graphics and so they require better specifications for computers to run correctly. It’s unlikely that you’ll find yourself playing 2021 games on an old PC, or unless it’s upgraded. Cloud gaming is an innovation that lets you play your favorite games on any device as long as you establish a stable internet connection.

Cloud gaming servers handle the processing of video games, not the hardware on your device. They accomplish this by sending you compressed frames in response to input. When you press a button this input gets sent to the cloud-based server, which then sends you a new video frame in response. It’s an easy concept, but it requires a large amount of bandwidth in order to transmit videos in real-time. This has traditionally slowed cloud gaming, however recent advancements in cell networks and edge computing have made it possible for cloud gaming to flourish.

In the end, services like Stadia and NVIDIA’s GeForce Now can stream games with near-real quality to devices that have different levels of power. They also eliminate the massive downloads and set-up processes involved in installing a new game on your device which is essential for people who have variable network conditions. But there are still a number of barriers to be overcome before cloud gaming can really take off such as issues with latency and bandwidth.
